15 years ago, there were only 10 registered electric vehicles in Bulgaria. Today, there are around 25,000, and there are 3,700 public charging points (of which 2,600 are AC and 1,100 are DC). The ratio of public points to electric vehicles is one of the best in Europe and is also the result of the consistent work of the Bulgarian Association of Electric Vehicles (BAEPS) since 2010.
On the initiative and with the active participation of BAEPS, a number of key changes were achieved:
● Free parking for electric vehicles in paid zones in large cities;
● A national strategy and legislative framework for electromobility, which envisages 100,000 electric vehicles and 10,000 public charging points;
● Municipal regulations facilitating the installation of charging stations in urban environments and a forecast by BAEPS members for the required capacity for new charging infrastructure by 2030;
● Low-emission zones – already implemented in Sofia and forthcoming in large cities with over 100,000 inhabitants;
● Investments from the EPRs and ESOs, as well as European and cross-border projects – over BGN 200 million planned by 2030, which will expand the coverage of the charging network and create intelligent load management solutions;
● The introduction of green license plates introduced in 2022, with which electric vehicles are easily recognized and benefit from preferences.
